La Gomera in detail

Travel with Children

La Gomera doesn’t have any of the theme parks, water slides and other family-oriented activities that make the bigger Canary Islands such magnets for children, but there's still plenty of fun to be had in the island's natural thrills. Accommodation here is generally very family-friendly (with, for example, good self-catering apartments) and pavements are in good nick, though don't expect many baby-change facilities.

The first stop for holidaying families is usually the beach, with good, often calm options in Valle Gran Rey, Alojera, Playa Santiago and San Sebastián. For tots who aren’t strong swimmers, pools like the one in Vallehermoso or at the island's many hotels are a safer bet.

Short boat trips are guaranteed to brighten children's days. Trips to the spectacular natural formation of Los Órganos sail from Valle Gran Rey, as do half-day whale- and dolphin-watching cruises, which also run from Playa Santiago. Older kids can go kayaking, cycling, snorkelling, paddleboarding and even diving in Valle Gran Rey and/or Playa Santiago.

Kids of all ages should also enjoy the Parque Nacional de Garajonay, which has a few short, easy, flat routes through forests that feel plucked from a fairytale. Recreational areas are great for children, such as La Laguna Grande here, with a picnic spot and playground.
