Car

If you plan on only visiting the major population centres in Extremadura, a car can be an inconvenience. The old centres of Cáceres, Mérida, Plasencia, Badajoz and, to a lesser extent, Trujillo and Zafra can be difficult to navigate if you're driving, and parking is limited. All these towns are well connected with each other and cities further afield by train and bus. If, on the other hand, you want to get off the beaten track to places such as Guadalupe, the Parque Nacional de Monfragüe, Alcántara, Monesterio, La Vera or the Sierra de Gata, you're much better off renting a car.

Bus

Extremadura's major population centres, including Cáceres, Mérida, Plasencia and Badajoz, are well linked to each other and more distant destinations by bus. Services and frequency dwindle once you leave the usual trails for places such as the Parque Nacional de Monfragüe, Guadalupe or Monesterio.
