El Hierro in
El Golfo is arguably the most spectacular part of El Hierro (you'll want more than a day here!). Admire the volcanic coastal scenery by walking between Las Puntas and La Maceta natural pool. Meet El Hierro's giant lizards at the Ecomuseo de Guinea & Lagartario, before a meal at Joapira in La Frontera. Then choose between lazing at quiet Charco Azul, visiting a winery, heading into wild La Dehesa or tackling the Camino de Jinama.
Drive north to the Mirador de la Peña for unforgettable views of El Golfo, then spin on to the incredible Mirador de Isora, near San Andrés, before continuing to the majestic El Pinar forest. Zigzag downhill through increasingly barren, volcanic mountainscapes to coastal La Restinga and the best diving in the Canaries. Dine at El Refugio or Casa Juan, and don't miss sparkling Cala de Tacorón.
Many people ignore El Hierro's east coast – a shame! Head south to windswept Las Playas, a long stretch of cobblestone beach perfect for a stroll. Lunch at the swish Parador or nearby Restaurante Guayana, then retrace your steps north to Tamaduste, with its calm cove, or La Caleta, with its family-friendly saltwater pools. Then check out pint-sized capital Valverde.
