El Hierro Drops: Wines & Wineries

Traditionally stemming from mineral-rich volcanic soils, El Hierro's unique wines are growing in popularity and recognition, with young reds, delicate rosés and a wide range of whites (both dry and sweet) produced at its usually small-scale bodegas. Grape varieties here – such as listán, baboso and verijadiego – are unusual and often acidic, many of them grown since several centuries ago. The island's main wine-producing areas are Echedo in the north, La Frontera in the west and El Pinar in the southeast.

Wine tourism on El Hierro is (slowly) blossoming: several local bodegas have now thrown open their doors to visitors for multilanguage tours and tastings, though you'll still need to call ahead to arrange a visit. An excellent place to start is La Frontera's Consejo Regulador Denominación de Origen El Hierro, where you'll get tips on visiting wineries across the island and try a wine or two in a sun-yellow 19th-century firewater bodega. Other standout vineyards open to the public include Los Llanillos' Bodega Soterana, La Frontera's Bodega Uwe Urbach and El Pinar's Bodega Elysar.
