Introduction

Castellón de la Plana (Valenciano: Castelló) is a provincial capital that's off the tourist radar. Though not over-endowed with sights, it's a pleasant place with good-value accommodation and a lively eating scene in its centre. Four kilometres from the centre, the Grao district is centred on the fishing port, and just north of here are the city's beaches. The area is notable for the major ceramics industry centred on the twin town of Villareal (also famous for its football team), just to the south. Castellón is the transport hub for the Costa del Azahar and Maestrazgo regions and has an underused international airport.
