Air

Airport

Bilbao’s airport is in Loiu, near Sondika, 12km northeast of the city. A number of European flag carriers serve the city. Of the budget airlines, EasyJet and Vueling cover the widest range of destinations.

Transport Options

An airport bus (€1.50, 20 minutes) provides decent public transport between the airport and downtown.

You'll also find metered taxis (around €25 to Casco Viejo), and car hire outfits.

Boat

Brittany Ferries (www.brittany-ferries.co.uk) runs regular service between Portsmouth and Bilbao (24 hours, two to three weekly, one-way including vehicle from £250).

Bus

Bilbao’s main bus station, Termibus, is west of the centre. There are regular services to the following destinations:

Bizkaibus travels to destinations throughout the rural Basque Country, including coastal communities such as Mundaka and Gernika (€2.50). Euskotren buses serve Lekeitio (€6.65).

If you're heading directly to San Sebastián after arriving in Bilbao airport, there's a direct service from the airport departing hourly from 6.45am to 11.45pm (€17, 1¼ hours).

Car & Motorcycle

The main road crossing into Basque Country from France is the highway (A63 in France) that links up with Spain’s AP8 tollway. This connects Bilbao with Biarritz (about 1¾ hours).

If coming from other parts of Spain, it's fairly straightforward arriving in Bilbao, though you'll want to avoid trying to drive near the old town, which is largely closed to traffic.

Train

The Abando train station is just across the river from Plaza Arriaga and the Casco Viejo. There are frequent trains to the following destinations:

Nearby is the Concordia train station, with its handsome art-nouveau facade of wrought iron and tiles. It is used by Renfe Feve, part of Spain's national Renfe line, which has trains running west into Cantabria. There are three slow daily trains to Santander (from €9, three hours) where you can change for stations in Asturias.

The Atxuri train station is just upriver from Casco Viejo. From here, Eusko Tren/Ferrocarril Vasco operates services every half-hour to the following:
