Welcome to Desierto de Tabernas
Travel 30km north of Almería and you enter another world. The Desierto de Tabernas (Tabernas desert) is a strange and haunting place, a vast, sun-baked scrubland of shimmering, dun-coloured hills scattered with tufts of tussocky brush. In the 1960s the area was used as a film location for Sergio Leone’s famous spaghetti westerns (A Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; and Once Upon a Time in the West), and still today film-makers come to shoot within its rugged badlands. Many of its ‘Western’ sets have now been incorporated into Wild West theme parks, which make for a fun family day out.
The main town in the area is Tabernas, on the N340A road.
