Halfway between Soria and Medinaceli, Almazán is one of those timeworn Castilian towns where the past overshadows the present. It frequently changed hands between the Muslims and Christians; improbably, for three short months it was chosen by Fernando and Isabel as their residence, which probably saved the town from everlasting obscurity and left behind a sprinkling of impressive historical landmarks. It's a worth an hour or two exploring if you're in the area.
