The amazing Cuevas del Aguila represent one of Avila’s geological heritage gems. There is access to practically the entire cave and they are in excellent state of preservation for visitorsThe Caves:The caves reach 50 meters depth and have a 1000 meters footpath. The tour descends along the paved path, with steps, which borders the galleries where stalactites and stalagmites of various colors and sizes abound. The lights highlight the color of the limestone formations.Origin: It is difficult to accurately date the origin of the caves, but experts date their complex geological process from 500 thousand to 1 million years. The cavity is formed by groundwater currents while slow seeps of rainwater create the different types of speleothems
Visit: Cuevas del Aguila, Arenas de San Pedro, Province of Avila, Castile and LeonThe caves are nestled in the small hill known as Cerro Romperropas or Cerro del Aguila (Hill of the Eagle in English), which gives name to the caves. The limestone rock is hidden by the oak forest that covers the hill, which makes the underground landscape we are going to discover even more surprising.Tour: There is daily access with intervals of 30 minutes and a walk of around 40 minutes, where visitors are accompanied by supervisor. The caves remain at a stable temperature of about 17 °C throughout the year, and a humidity close to 100%.Tours to the caves is done on foot, so it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear due to the high degree of humidity. There are some descriptive boards at the entrance with complementary information for the visitors.A supervisor/guide joins the visitors through this fascinating underground world, providing them with information about the discovery and unique formations of this amazing karst cavity, unparalleled to any other in the Iberian Peninsula.The caves are open to the public every day of the year, with a course of 1000 meters that lasts approximately 40 minutes.
