Conceived in the 1990s as a 'book village' to go with the newly created publishing centre of Paju Book City nearby, Heyri (헤이리) blossomed into a community of artists, writers, architects and creative free spirits. Two decades on, it's become Heyri Art Valley, a tourist hotspot of cafes and galleries with more kitsch than culture. For those with a keen interest in contemporary architecture, however, both Heyri and Paju Book City have several award-winning buildings in creative shapes and styles.
