Located roughly halfway between Jo’burg and Cape Town, Victoria West is a gracefully fading old railway town. If you need an overnight stop on the way across the Karoo, and want to get a feel for small-town life, Victoria West has a certain stuck-in-time allure. In fact, it has a distinct Wild West feel, tumbleweeds and all.
Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy wandering along Church St, with its mixture of building styles. The Apollo Theatre was sadly closed when we visited, but its art-deco facade is still worth a photo. The late-19th-century hotel – now a guesthouse – dominates the street, and you can easily imagine a couple of cowboys stepping out into the deserted main road for a high-noon scuffle.
