Ladysmith is a bustling base to tour the area’s battlefields. It was named after the wife of Cape governor Sir Harry Smith and achieved fame during the 1899–1902 Anglo-Boer War, when it was besieged by Boer forces for 118 days. Musical group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has its roots here. The town’s pretty colonial vestiges are faded, to be sure, but history enthusiasts will still find lots to enjoy.
