Johannesburg in detail

Most accommodation options are scattered across the northern suburbs, and you'll usually need a car or to take a taxi to reach the closest entertainment or shopping options. If you want to be close to the Inner City, your best bet is to stay in Braamfontein or Maboneng. Be mindful, though, that it’s not particularly safe to walk around certain inner-city areas alone at night.

Additional Information

Melville, Norwood and Rosebank are the best surburbs to be based if you like to walk to bars and restaurants.

Practical Tip: Accommodation Transfers

Most hostels offer free pick-up from the airport or the Gautrain stations at Sandton and Rosebank. Nearly all hostels are on the route of the Baz Bus. Guesthouses and hotels will also arrange for an airport pick-up, but you’ll be charged around R500.

Most hotels can organise tours to Soweto, Kruger National Park and elsewhere.
