Durban in Three Days

Start with a stroll along the beachfront, stopping for coffee or to watch surfers catching waves. Look out for flamboyantly dressed rickshaw drivers along the promenade. Choose from a range of activities at the Moses Mabhida Stadium then grab lunch and a beer at S43. Dine at one of Florida Road's laid-back restaurants.

On day two, start at the KwaMuhle Museum. Get your fill of art and culture in the city's various museums, including the art gallery under City Hall. Grab a bunny chow from Little Gujarat for lunch then browse the stalls of the Victoria Street Market to shop for fabrics, spices and trinkets from the subcontinent. If you haven't had your fill of spicy eats, grab dinner at family-run Mali's – one of Durban's best.

Spend the morning on day three exploring Durban's suburban cafe culture in Morningside, Musgrave or Glenwood, then take a picnic to enjoy in the Botanic Gardens. After lunch, head to uShaka Marine World to see sharks up-close in the aquarium, then sip a sundowner at Moyo, sitting at the end of the pier. For dinner with a view, head for Roma, one of Durban's oldest restaurants and its only revolving one.
