Flights & getting there

Air

Bloemfontein's airport is 10km from the city centre. A number of international airlines fly into Bloem via Cape Town or Jo’burg; check with STA Travel to organise flights around South Africa.

Mango connects Bloem with Cape Town (from R1200, two hours). CemAir has flights to Jo'burg (from R1200, one hour), Port Elizabeth (from R1600, 1½ hours) and George (from R1700,1½ hours). South African Express Airways connects to Jo'burg (from R1041, one hour) and Cape Town (from R1652, two hours). SA Airline flies to and from Durban.

A taxi from the airport (there’s often only one available) to the city centre is around R200, depending on where you are going.

Bus & Shared Taxi

Long-distance buses leave from the tourist centre on Park Rd. Translux runs daily buses to Cape Town (from R550, 13 hours), Durban (from R450, nine hours), East London (R400, nine hours), Jo’burg/Pretoria (R330, five hours) and Port Elizabeth (from R460, nine hours).

Greyhound and Intercape have similar services.

Most minibus shared taxis leave from near the train station and head to Maseru, Lesotho (R100, three hours), Kimberley (R120, four hours) and Jo’burg (R190, six hours). There’s usually at least one bus daily, but times vary.

Central Park Buses to Thaba 'Nchu leave from St George's St (R30, one hour).

Train

Shosholoza Meyl operates services three times weekly via Bloemfontein between Jo’burg (R230, seven hours) and Port Elizabeth (R330, 15 hours). There's also a service that passes by Bloem on the run between Jo’burg and East London (R230, 13 hours).
