Our guide is Garth Van Rensburg - an avid historian who has researched the minutest details of the battles and people involved. A master in the art of storytelling, Garth's vivid descriptions of many interesting facts at each site draw out the lessons learned. We explore Spioenkop, where a battle took place between the Boers and the British in 1900, then stay overnight at the same hotel where the Boer generals stayed overnight. We visit Mangeni Falls and the battlefield at Isandlwana – the most famous Zulu victory over the British. After a detailed tour we hike the 9km escape route in the footsteps of the very few British survivors from the battle in 1879, crossing the uMzinyathi River to arrive at the fabulous Fugitive’s Rest guest house for dinner and a good night’s rest. After breakfast we go to Rorke’s drift and learn how a handful of men held off an invasion force of 30 times their number overnight.
