Barberton's surrounding mountains are set to be proclaimed a World Heritage Site for their geological significance; the local greenstone belt allows geologists to see back 3.5 billion years. Bringing this to life, the Geotrail follows the tarred Rte 40 37km south to the Swazi border, with interpretive panels at 11 picnic sites and viewpoints en route.

The first viewpoint is just 2.5km south of town, and makes a good sunset drive or walk. You can get more information on the trail and organise guided tours at Barberton Tourism and Dusty Tracks.
