Tour description

Nestled in the heart of the Swartberg Mountains and Nature Reserve is a little valley known as Gamkaskloof (from the Khoisan word for Lion – Gamka), or as the locals refer to it, the Hell (Die Hel). It is a place that has been forgotten by time, and in order to get there you need to drive along rocky mountain passes on dirt roads. Travel with us in a 4x4 bakkie (pick-up truck) with your local guide, and learn more about the interesting history of this place with its natural beauty of fynbos and succulent Karoo veld, rugged mountains and the diversity of animal and bird life.

Highlights: • Scenic stops • Drive on winding mountain passes • Chance to see local wildlife like the elusive Klipspringer • Discover a magnificent area most people don’t know about What to expect:Your registered Tourist Guide will pick you up from your accommodation in George or Wilderness (arrangements can be made for other locations). From here our journey will begin, by traveling across the Outeniqua mountains, and past the town of Oudtshoorn until our tyres hit the dirt and gravel roads. Our fist mountain pass will be the Swartberg pass, that winds its way up the mountain towards the summit. Along the way we will make some stops for photo opportunities and to take in the spectacular views.Shortly after we have gone over the highest point in the pass, we will take the turnoff to Gamkaskloof, and the next 46 kilometres will bring us out at the entrance to the valley known as the Hell.We will descend along the 3 km road that twists and turns down to the bottom, where we encounter the fertile valley floor. The valley itself is 13 kilometres long, but only 600 meters wide. While there, your guide will tell you more about the interesting history of this forgotten place, and show you around the area on foot. Snacks (and water) will be provided for a picnic, before climbing up the mountain passes again on your return to George.
