Hiking & Mountain Biking

Kartografija's 1:40,000 Pohorje (€12) map outlines various circular hiking trails that are as short as 2km (30 minutes) and as long as 32km (eight hours). It covers the Šumik waterfalls, Black Lake and Osankarica. Another good one is the 12km hike (three hours) that leads northwest to the Lovrenc Lakes (Lovrenska Jezera), a turf swamp with 20 small lakes that are considered a natural phenomenon. The free Rogla-Zreče Karta Pohodnih Poti hiking map has 14 hikes and walks of between 3km and 33.5km.

Mountain bikers should get hold of a copy of the excellent free 1:100,000 Pohorje Cycling Map, with a dozen trails outlined from Maribor in the east to Slovenj Gradec and Dravograd in the west. The spa’s map/brochure (1:50,000) called Rogla Terme Radfahrwege/Cycling Paths is much more basic with nine trails linking Zreče, Rogla and Areh.

The central Pohorje region abounds in farmhouses with rooms and apartments for rent, particularly along Cesta Kmečnega near Resnik, about 7km southwest of Rogla. There are even more farmhouses accepting guests in Skomarje to the southwest. Enquire at the TIC in Zreče for more information.
