Ribnica is the oldest and most important settlement of western Dolenjska. It sits in the area known locally as Kočevsko – all woods, underground rivers and brown bears. It is a good springboard for the unspoiled forests of the Kočevski Rog, and worth a stop for anyone interested in local handicraft traditions.

Ribnica’s main street, Škrabčev trg, lies on the east bank of the tiny Bistrica River and runs parallel to it.

Note, too, that if you're searching online for Ribnica, there are a few Slovenian towns by the same name; Ribnica na Pohorju in northeast Slovenia has a stronger online presence. This town is Ribnica na Dolenjskem in online bus schedules etc.
