The Posavje region ( covers the lower Sava River valley as it extends towards the border with Croatia. Although often overlooked by travellers zooming between Ljubljana and Zagreb, dilly-dallying for a day or two in its rolling hills of vineyards and forests is a great way to see a slice of rural Slovenia. The Bizeljsko-Sremič wine district was made for puttering between boutique wineries on an afternoon's drive or cycle. Brežice has a castle-museum with a whopper of a frescoed hall, and island-bound Kostanjevica na Krki is charmingly teensy as well as being home to an engrossing art museum. Throw in a couple of excellent restaurants, and you're set for the day.
