If you want to go swimming, head to the riverfront at Podzemelj campground. The Kolpa River is clean and very warm (up to 28°C to 30°C in summer).
Metlika Wine Area
The hills to the north and northeast of Metlika are some of the Bela Krajina wine district's most important areas, producing such distinctive wines as Metliška Črnina (the ruby-red ‘Metlika Black’) and a late-maturing sweet ‘ice wine’ called Kolednik Ledeno Vino. They're also superb areas for easy walking.
On the way to Drašiči, an important wine town 6km from Metlika, you’ll see (or walk through) steljniki, stands of birch trees growing among ferns in clay soil – the very symbol of Bela Krajina. Drašiči itself is well known for its folk architecture, and you can sample local wines at several places on the route here. Phone beforehand to arrange your tour. Some of our favourites are:
Pečarič Tours here take in a trip to the cellar and a range of tasting choices; opt to either concentrate on sampling dessert wines or sparkling options or getting stuck into the heady reds or fruity whites. In Čurile.
Vinska Klet Prus The standout cellar in the Metlika area. The one- to two-hour tours take in the old and new cellars before a five-wine tasting with local snacks. In Krmačina.
Šuklje After a tour of the brick-lined cellar, sit down to taste the winery's Modra Frankinja (Blaufränkisch), Sauvignon and Laški Riesling. Book in for a post-tasting meal at its restaurant, which does excellent local dishes. In Trnovec.
Hiking & Walking
There are a lot of hikes and walks in Metlika's surrounding areas, outlined on the map Hiking Trails through Bela Krajina (available at the TIC). Walk No 19 is an easy 8km trail around Metlika including its old town. No 13 is the circular, 6.3km Urban Walking Trail through vineyards to Grabrovec and back via Veselica, a 233m-high small hill less than 1km north of Metlika with great views over the town. No 12 is the 2km Educational Path Zdenc to Vidovec, from the village of Božakovo to the Zdenc and Vidovec karst caves.
As a base while you're exploring the Bela Krajina region, Metlika has a couple of options but the out-of-town campgrounds (with cabins if you don't have a tent or motorhome) are a nicer choice.
Restaurants are thin on the ground within the city limits.
Drinking & Nightlife
There are a couple of cafe-bars scattered around town.
