Within striking distance of Novo Mesto, this small thermal resort is one of Slovenia's oldest spa towns. The pools are its main attraction, and while a large proportion of Dolenjske Toplice's visitors are here for medical purposes, the very swish Hotel Balnea and connected wellness centre are geared towards pampering and have brought spa-break tourism to town.

Located in the karst valley of the Sušica (a tributary of the Krka River) and surrounded by the wooded slopes of Kočevski Rog, it's also an excellent place in which to hike and cycle if you can pull yourself away from massages, sweat baths and thermal water soaks.
