Some great hikes and walks in the surrounding areas are outlined on the map Hiking Trails through Bela Krajina, available from the TIC. A number of them connect the smaller villages to Črnomelj's south. Walk No 1 is a 13km path from Dragatuš to Vinica dedicated to a local poet. No 2 is a 6km circular path beginning from Obrh (south of Dragatuš) that takes in forest scenery plus vineyards, castle ruins and village churches.

There's not a lot of choice for rooms, and the hostel is pretty grim – best to stock up on local maps and groceries and head out of town, where there are some great guesthouses and glamping options.

Nearby riverside campgrounds include those at Podzemelj, 10km northeast of Črnomelj, and Adlešiči, 12km to the southeast.

The centre has a couple of cheap and cheerful pizza joints and bakeries but eating options are thin on the ground here.

Drinking & Nightlife

There's a handful of cafe-bars scattered through the centre but nothing to write home about.
