A fresh-air adventure playground in winter and summer, the High Tatras are comfortably accessed from this string of resort towns. From west to east along Rte 537, they are Novy Smokovec, Starý Smokovec and Horný Smokovec. Cynics may note that areas of these towns feel purpose-built and geared towards tourists, but there's still plenty of charm among these log-lined chalets backed by the Tatras.
The region's history of holidaymaking is long: Starý Smokovec has been a mountain getaway since the late 18th century, and it retains a nostalgic air. This atmosphere, and the lower station of the funicular to Hrebienok, make Starý Smokovec the most popular base, but all of the Smokovec Resort Towns teem with mountain guides, hotels and ski-rental outfits.
