Welcome to Belá Tatras
East of the High Tatra ridges, the fragrant meadows and peaks of the Belá Tatras (Belianske Tatry) are infused with the distinctive atmosphere of Goral folk culture. The wooden cottages of these Central European highlanders, often with jaunty red-and-white paintwork, are as unmistakeable as their colourful traditional clothing. Ždiar is the best place to admire both, between heavy platefuls of rich Goral cuisine. It's also an excellent starting point for forays into the Belá Tatras, and perhaps onward into the High Tatras range. For something more local and low-key, small mountain-biking and ski areas can be found a short distance from Ždiar.
