Raffish Colbar is an evocative colonial throwback, a former British officers' mess turned languid drinking spot. It's still 1930-something here: a place where money is kept in a drawer, football team photos hang on the wall and locals linger with beers and well-priced ciders on the spacious verandah. It is still run by Mr and Mrs Lim, who opened the doors in 1953.

The old, stained menu has no shortage of hangover-friendly colonial classics, including a standout chicken curry with diced vegetables and proper old-school chips.
