Sheltered by the rolling green hills of Šumadija region, industrial Kragujevac might not be of huge tourist appeal but it's an important destination for anyone with an interest in history. This was the first capital (1818–41) of the modern Serbian state, the birthplace of its industrial revolution, and the location of one of the greatest tragedies the country suffered during WWII – these important stories are told in the town's three worthwhile museums. Today Kragujevac is Serbia's fourth-largest city, a lively place with a significant student population and an up-and-coming music festival; it's also a good base for exploring the region.
