Welcome to Whalsay & Out Skerries
Whalsay is popular for sea angling, and for trout fishing in its lochs. There are also scenic walks past colonies of breeding seabirds, where you may catch sight of seals.
Northeast of Whalsay, another fishing community occupies the tiny Out Skerries, made up of the three main islands of Housay, Bruray (these two are connected by a road bridge) and Grunay, plus a number of islets. Their rugged cliffs teem with birdlife. The community has had a tough time in recent years, with the main employer closing, prompting a population drain. The school has since closed too, awaiting pupils.
