Forth Boat Tours runs daily 90-minute trips along the Firth of Forth, heading via its majestic bridges, storied islands and shoreline landmarks (including the epic Edinburgh skyline) to Inchcolm. Most voyages offer a 90-minute stopover (£6) on the island, a place of blond beaches, squawking seabirds and abandoned defences that's famed for its medieval abbey – it's well worth it.

If you're travelling at low tide, you're likely to spot grey seals basking on the rocks, and puffins can also make an appearance between April and July. From November to March, Forth Boat Tours runs cruises upriver instead, passing via the Forth's bridges to imposing Blackness Castle (adult/child £18.50/10, including afternoon tea).
