Away from the busy western road, the loch's eastern shore is a quieter spot populated mostly by walkers and campers. Nevertheless, the narrow road gets busy. It runs from Drymen through attractive Balmaha, where you can hire boats.

There are several lochside picnic areas; Milarrochy Bay (1.5 miles north of Balmaha), has a nice gravel beach and superb views across the loch to the Luss hills.

The road ends at Rowardennan, where there's a hotel, hostels and boat hire, but the hiking trail West Highland Way continues north along the shore of the loch. It's 7 miles to Inversnaid, reachable by road from the Trossachs, and 15 miles to Inverarnan at the loch's northern end. Rowardennan is also the launchpad for climbing Ben Lomond.
