My husband and I will be traveling to Scotland this summer (July/August). Here's our itinerary so far:
-Day 1: arrive in Glasgow, drive through Loch Lohmond National Park, do some hiking, drive to Tarbert; spend the night in Tarbert
-Day 2: take the morning ferry to Islay (Kennacraig ferry), tour scotch/gin distilleries; stay in Islay
-Day 3: take the mid-morning ferry back to Kennacraig arriving around noon, **Plan right now is to drive up the coast to Glencoe with stops for sightseeing, spend…
In October the Caledonian Sleeper will have new carriages and a new fare structure. The biggest impact will be on single travellers who will no longer be able to share a two-berth compartment, they must book it at almost double the price for themselves. Sharing will be prohibited. Why? Don't ask me.
Staying in Oban 2 days and would like to visit the islands for one day with no overnight. Looking for a suggestion of the best island day trip. Should we bring our rental car or forego?
Hello. I am traveling to Edinburgh next week for 6 days. As I get my trip together, I realized I wanted to ask the lovely folks on this forum for some social/cultural tips.
I try very hard to not be "a stupid American tourist". I am polite, I tip well (where it is a practice), I am respectful. But, what tips do you have to ensure I don't come off rude unknowingly? What should I do or avoid to not be "that tourist" during my stay?
As soon as I speak, folks will know I am from the US…

We are travelling to Scotland mid July and planning on hiring a car for 3 weeks to tour around
D. I’ve heard accommodation is difficult. Are hostels all booked out or can you expect to find available accommodation?
Prices for Greenmotion auto rental at Edinburgh airport are as low as 78 pounds. Arnold Clark, which has been highly recommended, is 172. Greenmotion has terrible reviews, except for the site traveljigsaw, where they are rated well. Does anyone have any experience with Greenmotion? I am wondering if it is worth paying the extra money (quite a bit, since I will rent for 2-3 weeks) to rent from Arnold Clark. Thanks for any info.
We are in Crieff, about an hour north of Edinburgh. I was looking at car rentals in the area (stirling, Dunblane, Perth) but cannot find anything reasonable. The cheapest I can find is in Edinburgh airport, but that is more than an hour away by bus and train. Does anyone have any suggestions for car rentals in Scotland. Is liability insurance usually included?
