Icehotel, Sweden

Somewhere between a chandelier and an igloo, the famed Icehotel at Jukkasjärvi is a justifiably popular destination – it may be a gimmick, but it's also really cool (and not just literally). Sleep among reindeer skins in a hotel sculpted anew from ice each winter; hang out in the attached Icebar, sipping chilled vodka out of ice glasses. Beyond its own appeal, the hotel makes a good base for admiring the aurora borealis and learning about Sámi culture in this part of Lapland. Similar hotels exist in Norway and Finland.
