Feature: Imigongo Paintings

Eastern Rwanda is famous for its superb imigongo paintings. They consist of a series of geometric patterns made with cow dung, which are painted (usually in red, white and black colours made from local plants mixed with ash). In certain villages, including Kirehe (Nyararambi), some houses have their outer walls decorated with cow-dung paintings.

You can buy imigongo paintings in various shops and hotels around Rwanda, but if you're heading to Akagera National Park, it's well worth making a detour to Kirehe, where you can purchase such paintings and see how they are created at a few cooperatives, including Chez Gasana and Coopérative Kakira Art Imigongo.
