Welcome to Eastern Rwanda
While much of Rwanda is characterised by equatorial rainforest, rolling hills, mountains and richly cultivated farmland, eastern Rwanda is something else entirely. Contiguous with the dry and flat savannah lands of Tanzania, this region is more reminiscent of the classic images of East African landscapes. While sights are scarce in this part of the country, Akagera National Park is one of Rwanda’s highlights and another postgenocide success story. The park has done an impressive job of rehabilitating its decimated animal population since refugees flooded into the park during the genocide, and it's one of the most progressively run national parks in East Africa. And, since 2017, you can even spot all of Africa's iconic safari species – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, giraffe and zebra.
