Where to Stay

Historic Heart

For

Quite frankly, this is where you want to be if you have the chance. Everything is here, right on your doorstep, and it takes a maximum of 20 minutes to get anywhere on foot within this neighbourhood.

Against

Accommodation here can be more expensive.

Sennaya & Kolomna

For

Far quieter and less busy than the Historic Heart, while still definitely historic and central itself. Great for access to the Mariinsky Theatre.

Against

Distances on foot can be very long, especially if you’re staying in Kolomna, where there’s currently no metro station (one is under construction).

Smolny & Vosstaniya

For

Equally in the thick of things as the Historic Heart, this happening part of town around the lower half of Nevsky Pr is home to much of St Petersburg’s youth culture and artistic life.

Against

Smolny, in particular, can feel surprisingly remote from the rest of the city due to bad transport links and its own backwater ambience.

Vasilyevsky Island

For

A very pleasant residential area. Very well connected to the rest of the city as long as you’re within easy walking distance of one of the metro stations.

Against

If you’re not near the metro, you will feel very isolated out here. If you are looking to party in St Petersburg during the summer months, this is not a good option as the bridges rise at night.

Petrograd & Vyborg Sides

For

The Petrograd Side is both central and very pleasant, with lots of local sights and easy transport links to the centre of town.

Against

If you are looking to party in St Petersburg during the summer months, this is not a good option as the bridges rise at night.
