Feature: Ceaușescu's Moving Block

When it comes to the demands of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, many of them beggar belief. But his order in 1987 to shift housing block A2 in Alba Iulia by 55m, so he could enjoy views of the mountains from the citadel, ranks among the most pointlessly grandiose. Enter virtuouso engineer Eugeniu Iordăchescu, who masterminded the moving of this 80-apartment block (around 7,600 tonnes) on wheels. Locals say the five-hour process was so smooth that upper floor tenants not only stayed in the building, but barely felt it move.
