Saudi Arabia closed its land border to Qatar in 2017 due to a major diplomatic rift that's still ongoing.
Even before the 2017 blockade, relations between Qatar and its neighbour Bahrain had not always been the best. It was only relatively recently the two countries stopped haggling over ownership of the Hawar Islands. Qatar and Bahrain were attempting to at last put their differences aside, and work was scheduled to begin on a 40km road link between the two countries, with a scheduled (if somewhat optimistic) completion date of 2022, in time for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The project was planned to involve multiple bridges supported on reclaimed land – similar to King Fahd Causeway, which links Bahrain to Saudi Arabia. For now, amid the Gulf-Qatar diplomatic crisis, all plans are on hold. If it ever does go ahead, it would form the longest fixed link across water in the world.
Cruise ships usually dock at Hamad Port on Doha Corniche. As Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain have closed their territorial waters to Qatar, sea transport remains difficult. Travel on routes between neighbouring countries involved in the diplomatic crisis has ceased.
