El Yunque's Remote Southern Side
For pure off-the-beaten-path joy, skip the northern side of El Yunque and head to the region’s alternative entrance off the southern portion of Hwy 191, just west of the town of Naguabo. Since mudslides closed the central section of the road in the 1970s, the southern expanse of the rainforest has remained relatively isolated and unexplored.
Spend the night at one of the wonderful southern-side lodgings up the precipitous and winding Hwy 191. From there, you can procure directions to a number of nearby hiking and swimming spots, or hire a local expert to guide you to some of the area’s highlights including hard-to-reach waterfalls and Taíno petroglyphs.
