Loosen a belt notch for Taste Porto's superb downtown food tours, where you'll sample everything from Porto's best slow-roast-pork sandwich to éclairs, fine wines, cheese and coffee. Friendly, knowledgeable guide André and his team lead these indulgent and insightful 3½-hour walking tours, which take in viewpoints and historic back lanes en route to restaurants, grocery stores and cafes.

Taste Porto have branched out recently to offer other experiences that immerse you fully in Porto's growing food scene. Among them are the new Vintage Food Tours, with tastings including petiscos (Portuguese small plates), conservas (canned fish), chocolate and traditional egg-based sweets. These conclude with a port wine tasting.

For Instagram fans, there's the new Photo Food Experience, taking a behind-the-scenes look at four tasting locations, with plenty of photo tips and tricks between bites to eat.

Most of the tours meet near Bolhão metro station. The exact location is provided with tickets, which must be booked at least a day in advance.
