Hiking in Northwestern Peneda-Gerês

Starting in Castro Laboreiro, this strenuous and spectacular 17km, seven-hour loop rambles over some of Peneda-Gerês' oldest footpaths, crossing between the high country brandas – the summer settlements where families traditionally travelled with their flocks in spring to plant potatoes and rye – and the lower-elevation inverneiras, where pigs were slaughtered and meats smoked during the chilly winter months.

Along the way the route, well-signposted with red and yellow blazes, crosses some beautiful old stone bridges, including the 1st-century Roman Ponte Cava da Velha and the later Ponte da Varziela.
