Welcome to Fátima

Before this event, there was nothing here (little can grow on limestone, which is what the area is comprised of). These days, it's another story.

For Catholic pilgrims Fátima has a magnetic appeal like few places on earth, and whatever your faith, or otherwise, a trip here will provide you with new insights into Portugal’s religious culture.

Fátima is packed with boarding houses and restaurants for the pilgrim masses, plus hundreds of shops crowded with glow-in-the-dark Virgins and busts of the Pope.

Private Tour: Fatima Sightseeing

On this private tour from Lisbon, you'll journey north to the town of Fatima, famous for a religious experience three children had about 100 years ago. On May 13, 1917, three peasant children claimed to have seen an apparition of Our Lady of the Rosary (aka Our Lady of Fatima, aka the Blessed Virgin Mary). This event turned this small town, a rocky rural village that produced olive oil, into one of the most important religious sites in the world. You’ll visit Sanctuary Square, where the basilica commemorates the apparition and protects the mortal remains of the three children. It overlooks the massive square and easily holds the thousands of people who gather here each year. If you’d like, you can light a candle like the pilgrims do in search of the protection of Our Lady of Fatima.
