The big attraction in Ericeira is surfing. Serious aficionados congregate 3km north of town at Praia da Ribeira d’Ilhas, a World Qualifying Series (WQS) site and frequent host to Portuguese national surfing championships; most amateurs will find the waves at the nearer Praia de São Sebastião sufficiently challenging.
Surf schools (escolas de surf) abound in Ericeira. Most offer a week's package, which includes lessons, equipment and, in many cases, accommodation. A couple of outfits focus on stand-up paddleboards. Contact Ask Me Ericeira for a list of registered schools.
Ericeira World Surfing Reserve
The Ericeira World Surfing Reserve is Europe's only surfing reserve and is one of only 10 in the world awarded with such a distinction by the Save The Waves Coalition. It stretches from Praia da Empa, 2km north of town, to Praia de São Lourenço, 6km north of town, covering seven world-class waves across a span of 4km: Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos and São Lourenço. For a panoramic view of the action, don't miss the stunning Miradouro Ribeira d'Ilhas.
