Information from Viator
Witness one of Poland's most somber sites, the Nazi German concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau, on this 7-hour trip from Krakow. Over a million people died here during World War II and the site is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Tour includes entrance fees, guided group tour with documentary movie, and door-to-door service.
Your driver will collect you from your Krakow hotel between 8am and 9am. It's generally about a 90-minute drive to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. You'll start at Auschwitz I, the first camp to be built on the site, where you'll join an English-language tour provided by the museum. Begin by watching a documentary movie about the history of Nazi concentration camps in German-occupied Poland before exploring the site with your guide. Many of the original buildings here have been converted into powerful and moving museums.Next, stay with your group for the transfer to Auschwitz II-Birkenau, about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) away, where around a million people were killed, more than 90% of them Jews. Much of the camp was demolished, but you'll see the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria where so many went to their deaths. You'll spend about an hour here with the same guide before returning to the main gate. Here you'll rejoin your driver and board your van for the transfer back to Krakow. You should be back at your hotel between 3:30pm and 4:30pm. Please note that bad traffic can create delays.
