Sukayu Onsen Ryokan

Top choice in Aomori Prefecture

Straight from an ukiyo-e (woodblock print), Sukayu's cavernous, dark-wooded bathhouse is a delight for the senses. The water is hot, acidic and sulphurous (don't get it in your eyes) – nothing beats the feel of its penetrating heat. Note that the main bath is konyoku (mixed bathing). Rooms in the sprawling old-fashioned inn are simple but comfortable, with shared facilities.
