It says 'downtown' but this purpose-built hostel is on a quiet residential West End side street a couple of downhill blocks from the beach. It's popular with older hostelers and families, the dorms are all small and rates include continental breakfast. Private rooms with their own sinks are available. There's also bike storage, a full kitchen and a cool rooftop patio.

At this most 'institutional' of Vancouver's three HI hostels, the front-deskers are especially friendly. Book well ahead for private rooms, and ask about their popular Stanley Park tours.
