Tea-maker extraordinaire Romesh Ram Gour, the man behind the legendary Nilkantha Tea Cabin, is the creator of one of the most famous types of tea in Bangladesh. His Willy Wonka-esque seven-colour tea (Tk 75) has even appeared in some foreign press articles. Yes, it really does have seven distinct layers of colour and seven equally differing tastes.
It’s so popular that Gour has opened a second tea cabin about 1km further south. You can order any number of layers, from two up to seven. Each layer costs Tk 10, as do the other more orthodox tea flavours on offer.
The original tea stall is an easy 10-minute walk from town; cross the railway line at the train station and keep going until you reach the Bangladesh Border Guard barracks on your left. The second cabin is another 10 minutes by foot along the same road, to the right of the thoroughfare.
Note that other multilayer tea pretenders have opened up in and around Srimangal, but their tea layers tend to merge into a cloudy mess. Nilkantha is the original and, for now at least, still the best.
