Welcome to Northeast Luzon
Get yourself to northeast Luzon and you’re deep in the Filipino frontier. Hill tribes, huge swathes of forest, small towns connected by smaller lumber tracks – you won’t find many Filipinos, let alone foreigners, out this way, with the exception of those in hip surfing town and weekend getaway Baler. The Cagayan River, the country’s longest inland waterway, cuts a swathe through this famously fertile region. East of the river are the Sierra Madre, among the country’s most impenetrable mountains, home to wild and woolly Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park.
