Classic, Cusco to Cusco

Tour description provided by G Adventures

Spend two weeks working at a voluntary drop-in centre for children and youth where they can get help with homework, a hot meal and participate in a variety of workshops. Children living in extreme poverty in Cusco are often forced to drop out of school to work or beg on the streets to help support their families. You will be contributing to a project that provides children from poor families with a place to get guidance and support.

Itinerary

Day 1 Cusco A G Adventures representative will hold a general briefing in the evening, normally between 7pm and 8pm (a note will be posted in the arrival hotel with details). Additional Notes: Please note that hot water shortages and power outages can be fairly common in Peru (even in upgraded hotels and private homes). We appreciate your patience and understanding that these occurrences are outside of our control. Included Activities: Arrival Day Meet and Greet Hotel Welcome Meeting
Day 2 Cusco In the morning, a G Adventures representative will meet you, take you to the volunteer project and make sure you are settled. Amidst the mountainous surroundings, stunning architecture and rich culture of Cusco, there is the bitter reality of children either working or begging on the streets. Many of these children are unable to cope with the stress of both working and going to school, which leads them to give up their studies in order to help provide for their families. Other children leave home because they have been abused, neglected or abandoned, turning to alcohol, drugs, or sniffing glue to help relieve their hunger pains. In order to support themselves, some children resort to begging or prostitution. By providing impoverished children with a place where they can receive guidance and support, we are helping to keep these children off the streets, and giving them the hope, confidence and skills needed to create a future for themselves. Additional Notes: VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS No experience is necessary, but Intermediate Spanish is required. Conversational Spanish at a level that enables you to comfortably interact with the children (for example helping them with homework), will ensure you have a rewarding experience. Please consider whether your Spanish level is sufficient to easily work with children in an after school program environment. Included Activities: Children's Project Volunteering
