Tarma itself is quite appealing, ushering visitors in under the gorgeous archway of its main thoroughfare, without wowing you. Some interesting Inca ruins pepper the nearby hills, though. Local excursions include visits to one of Peru’s key pilgrimage sites, El Señor de Muruhuay (the Christ of Muruhuay) near Acobamba (9km from Tarma); the huge limestone cave Gruta de Huagapo; and the tapestry-making village San Pedro de Cajas (41km away).
